  1. Fünf Bemerkungen zu den Pandora-Fonts von Neenie Billawala:

  3. 1. Copyright: Die Datei COPYRIGH bezieht sich vermutlich auf die UNIX-Version
  4. von TeX ("free redistribution under the same provisions as hold for the
  5. remainder of this distribution"), darum hier ein Auszug aus den Copyright-
  6. Bestimmungen dieser UNIX-Version:
  7.  
  8.    We are frequently asked if it is proper for the recipient of a Unix 
  9.    TeX tape to give Unix TeX to other sites.  Since Donald Knuth has 
  10.    released the TeX programs as free public-domain software, it is quite 
  11.    proper but, in our opinion, it will probably be very much to the
  12.    advantage of a site to get the distribution tape from us rather than
  13.    from another site.  There are three reasons for this.  First, when a
  14.    site requests the tape from us, we have a record of who has the
  15.    software.  We are therefore able to contact them if we discover a
  16.    major bug or to announce new versions of the software or the macro
  17.    packages (this, incidentally, is also an excellent reason for every
  18.    site to join the TeX Users' Group).  Stanford tells us that they
  19.    receive a few telephone calls each week from people with out of date
  20.    versions of TeX which have developed problems.  Since these people
  21.    have been out of touch with the more recent TeX developments, they've
  22.    been unaware of the previous detection and resolution of their
  23.    problems.  Second, when a site contacts us for a tape, they then know
  24.    who to contact to report any problems they may run into.  Third, a
  25.    site receiving a tape from us knows that they are receiving a complete
  26.    distribution.

  28.    On the other hand, we consider it undesirable and unnecessary to
  29.    require that multiple computers at the same location each request a
  30.    separate copy of the distribution, particularly when the same
  31.    individual is responsible for installing and maintaining TeX on each
  32.    of these machines.  Additionally, our understanding of Stanford's
  33.    intentions is that the software is available to be freely
  34.    redistributed and that the copyright notices appearing on some of the
  35.    software are intended to prohibit misrepresentation of modified
  36.    versions of the software (as being, for example, TeX) not to restrict
  37.    distribution.

  40. 2. Bei mir traten Probleme mit dem Zeichensatz PNTT9.MF sowohl auf dem
  41. Laserdrucker (SLM804) als auch im "proof-mode" auf. Es erschien die META-
  42. FONT-Fehlermeldung "! The paths don't intersect." Weitere Untersuchungen
  43. ergaben, dass das Problem im Makro outer_juncture_path in der Datei PANDOR.MF
  44. liegt, und zwar dort, wo der "stem_path" mit dem Pfad "(z2--z3)" geschnitten
  45. wird. Es ist also nicht unwahrscheinlich, dass die Zeichensaetze noch Fehler
  46. oder zumindest Ungenauigkeiten enthalten.

  48. In diesem Zusammenhang erscheint es mir sinnvoll, nochmal den Hinweis zu
  49. geben, dass es sich um Dateien im "Teststatus" handelt:

  51.    "These fonts should be considered as in a beta state."   (PANDOR.TXT)

  53. Das Problem wurde dadurch umgangen, dass der Parameter juncture_opening
  54. in Datei PNTT9.MF von 0 auf 0.1 erhoeht wurde. Die Originalversion der
  55. Datei befindet sich in PNTT9.ORI. Das gleiche gilt für PNSTT9.MF.

  57. 3. Inzwischen ist das Buch erschienen, das die Grundlagen der Pandora-Fonts
  58. beschreibt, und das bereits im Band E der Reihe "Computers & Typesetting"
  59. (Computer Modern Typefaces) angekuendigt wurde. Mehr dazu in der METAFONT-
  60. Anleitung im Literaturverzeichnis.

  63. 4. Der Status einer Testversion bringt leider auch mit sich, dass die Datei-
  64. namen noch nicht feststehen. Es gab im Laufe der Zeit einige Umbenennungen,
  65. die auch den Namen der GF/PK/TFM-Dateien und damit TeX und die Treiber
  66. betrafen. Im folgenden eine Tabelle mit dem jetzigen (vorlaeufigen) Namen
  67. und allen bekannten "Aliasnamen":

  84. 5. Au₧er einigen Änderungen aufgrund der neuen Dateinamen wurde noch in der
  85. Datei pandor.mf ein "for=" durch das korrekte "for n=" ersetzt, au₧erdem
  86. wurden die mir bekannten Versionen der Zeichensätze leicht durcheinander-
  87. gemischt und jeweils die besten und "richtigsten" Dateien verwendet. In
  88. pnstt9.mf wurde am Dateiende die Abfrage auf den mode korrigiert (vorher
  89. wurden die Zeichen nur für Imagen- und APS-Drucker korrekt erzeugt). Der
  90. momentane Zustand der Verwirrung (bzw. der vielen verschiedenen Versionen)
  91. sollte aber ganz klar als vorübergehend betrachtet werden. Ich bin noch
  92. dabei, die Angelegenheit zu klären und hoffe, irgendwann eine Version
  93. verbreiten zu können, die sowohl das Attribut "offiziell" als auch ein
  94. "funktionsfähig" verdient.
